Humboldt Fog Cheese ReviewSubmitted by Jon on Sat, 07/04/2009 - 10:11 |
Humboldt Fog is a cheese I've been wanting to try for quite some time. Frankly, how I've avoided it this long is a mystery. Although this is a California cheese I wouldn't call it "local" since it's made in Arcata which is over 1000 miles away. But still, most of the cheeses I've eaten lately have come from the opposite side of the planet, so what the hell. Maybe it is local.
The version we got from Whole Foods was showing a pronounced runny shell and was probably right at it's peak. Miss BatGrl and I spent much time fiddling over the cheese and tasting various sections. The airy middle, the ash vein in the center, the runny bits, the mold rind. These was much discussion about whether it was proper or advisable to eat the rind. Miss BatGrl fell solidly into the "Are you nuts? I'm not eating that" camp, while I of course assumed that if it wasn't suppose to be eaten it wouldn't be attached.
For the record, I didn't like the rind. It was mostly tasteless, but it had a gummy texture that I thought really didn't compliment the cheese. At all.
The cheese was creamy, light, powdery, slightly lemony and mildly goaty with a stronger flavor near the rind. Very yummy scooped up and eaten straight, or spread on crackers.
All in all a pretty damn good cheese. And a wonderful fresh change from the months old cheeses dredged up from basements and caves we've been trying lately.
The cat didn't like it. Not the rind. Not the paste. Not the runny good stuff. So poo on the cat. I guess he can just eat cat food or something.

I tried this cheese for the first time about 6 months ago and thought I had died and gone to heaven! Fabulous with crackers, but as we don't eat much in the way of carb-loaded foods, we just had it by itself. OUT OF THIS WORLD. Yes, a stronger flavored cheese, but one of the softer flavors. I like the rind, personally. My husband doesn't. Hard to describe in retrospect...guess I better find some more!!! From the previous reviewer, F- the cat! Sometimes the felines just don't have the best taste! Laura, cheese lover

Actually the cat has been taken off the cheese tasting team. For some reason we think he pukes more often after eating too much cheese. Which is sad, because he really likes it.
