Gruyere du Savoie CheeseSubmitted by Jon on Fri, 07/03/2009 - 20:18 |
This was a French Gruyere. Which is odd. When I think of French Gruyere I think of Comte or Beaufort. Well, this one was clearly marked Gruyere du Savoie, so we'll just take it as given.
But frankly no one was very impressed. It certainly had a Gruyere sort of taste - deep fruity and nutty flavors - but it was just too mild. We had to let it warm up quite a bit to even get some flavor out of it. I'm sure it would have made a passable fondue, but with plenty of other great cheeses to pick from, I'm not sure why.
Even a Google search doesn't turn up much on "Gruyere du Savoie".
My advice - Stick to the usual stuff. If you want Gruyere, get Gruyere. If you want French Gruyere, get Comte or Beaufort.
