Appenzeller Cheese

Now *that's* cheese.

This was a chance find at my local mega-mart - Emmi Appenzeller. Which seems very odd, since my local mega-mart barely even has a cheese section. But there it was. Frankly I'm a bit suspicious of a chunk of prewrapped cheese from one of Switzerland's largest commercial cheese makers, but stuff was really good.

A bit sharper then Gruyere and with a more pungent farmyard aroma, distinct fruity taste, and some elusive spiciness. Very good to nibble on.

Now I just need to hunt down some fresher slices from a smaller producer.

Update - 12/14/2006 - We got another sample of more traditional Appenzeller. Much the same as the Emmi, but better flavor and more of a wash-rind character. I tried it on club sandwiches and it was delicious.
