Allgauer Bergkäse [AHL-goy-ear Bearg-kasa] is a German PDO cheese. It's slightly similar to other mountain cheeses such as Compte or Emmentaler, but with a stronger flavor.

Aromatic, nutty, rustic, unique. Good for snacking or cooking. I ended up making a three cheese Alfredo with this, but I think it would make an excellent fondue.

Seeing as this is the only German PDO (meaning it can only be made in one place and must use traditional methods) cheese we can get here in the U.S., I'd say this is certainly worth trying.
