Cabecou Feuille Cheese ReviewSubmitted by Jon on Thu, 07/02/2009 - 21:31 |
Cabecou Feuille [CAB-bay-koo few-AYEs] is one of my new favorite cheeses. We got to sample some of this at Artisan Cheese Gallery and I was instantly smitten. Fresh goat cheese, dipped in plum brandy, tossed in peppercorns, and then wrapped in chestnut leaves. Of course I had to buy some.
First of all it comes in this cool little packet of chestnut leaves. I think I'm a sucker for cheese ripened in leaves. Then you taste it and the fruity undertones from the plum brandy hits you. Then you bite down and get a blast of pepper. And the packet only really has enough cheese for a couple nibbles, so it's wonderfully indulgent.
Other than the flavorings it's just your typical creamy, tangy, lemony goat cheese. But the leaves do add some nice astringency.
Miss BatGrl wasn't as impressed as I was, I think because she got an especially large hit of pepper in her sample. And the cat didn't like it at all. I think he has an aversion to wine and spices though, so not too surprising.
